The difference between return on sales, return on capital and return on equity

In the financial and business world you will often hear people quoting percentage returns. eg ‘That investment gave a 10% return’.

This statement of course is quite meaningless unless you know what the return is calculated against.

Today Andee discusses three types of returns and explains how they are calculated.

An 80th Birthday To Remember

This last week I’ve been to New Zealand to celebrate my father’s 80th birthday.

He invited about 200 people to come and specifically asked for no presents. Instead he asked for us to contribute to the mission work with the Carpenters Kids in Tanzania.

These children have nothing and need a hand up in life. It takes about $80 per year to give them food, clothing and education.

This selfless act made me think about how my own father has been giving out to others all his life. What an amazing way to have an 80th birthday and celebrate by investing in the next generation.

Made me think how often we are focused on ourselves and fail to think about those who are coming next.

I heard this week that they have raised around $10,000 from those who came on the night and I feel very privileged to be a part of such a great cause and celebration.

It is an 80th birthday that I’ll never forget and now the challenge for me is to follow in my father’s footsteps and be focused on others more than simply myself.

Three Tips When Starting a Business

I wish that someone had given me these three tips when I started out in business nearly ten years ago.

I had been an employee in other people’s businesses for nearly twenty years and then had the chance to start my own.

Having never started a business from scratch before, I really should have focused on these three tips and things would have gone better.

  1. Keep It Simple
  2. Don’t over complicate what you’re trying to achieve.

The famous Kellogs advertisement which says “The simple things in life are always the best” is a great piece of advice in starting your business.

  3. Focus on Lead generation
  4. There is a well known phrase “Build it and they will come” which was great before consumers got used to having lots of choice.

Your customers have so much choice these days that just building something will not mean customers coming through the door.

The focus in starting a business must be on getting customers coming through your door and the only way this happens is by focusing on lead generation and getting your business in front of as many people as possible

  5. Keep Money in Separate Bank Account
  6. The last tip is about structure and the fact that it really is not important when you’re first starting out.

In the future when you have plenty of business it becomes important and particularly when doing your tax planning.

When you start out just keep all the money side of your business in a separate bank account.

Make sure you understand and manage the cash in and cash out in your business.

Get the cash in greater than the cash out as fast as possible.
